Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Scaling and root planing — the first-line therapy for early to moderate periodontitis.
Scaling and root planing is a meticulous, non-surgical cleaning below the gumline. For most early to moderate cases of periodontitis, it is the first — and often only — intervention needed.
What it accomplishes
- Removes calculus and biofilm from root surfaces
- Reduces periodontal pocket depth
- Halts active bone loss when combined with maintenance
Adjuncts
Locally applied antimicrobials, laser therapy, and — in selected cases — a short course of systemic antibiotics can improve outcomes. Maintenance every three to four months is the piece that determines whether results hold.
