Fluoride vs. Hydroxyapatite
The most-studied enamel-protective agent — and the promising fluoride-free alternative.
Fluoride works by strengthening enamel against acid attack and encouraging remineralization. Its evidence base is the deepest of any preventive intervention in dentistry.
The hydroxyapatite conversation
Nano-hydroxyapatite toothpastes appear to remineralize enamel through a different mechanism — biomimetic rather than chemical. Emerging trials are encouraging, particularly for patients seeking a fluoride-free protocol.
What most patients should do
For high-caries risk, fluoride remains first-line. For low-risk patients seeking an alternative, hydroxyapatite is a defensible choice — supported by research, if not yet as much of it.
