Professional Whitening: What Actually Works
In-office versus supervised at-home, hydrogen peroxide versus carbamide, and the myths in between.
Whitening removes intrinsic and extrinsic stains through controlled oxidation. The active ingredient — hydrogen peroxide, or the more slowly releasing carbamide peroxide — is what matters. Everything else is delivery.
In-office
Higher concentrations, professionally isolated soft tissue, and immediate results — though sensitivity is more common.
Supervised at-home
Custom trays with lower concentration gel, worn for one to two weeks. Often the most durable, sensitivity-friendly approach.
What over-the-counter cannot do
Strips and generic trays can lighten superficial staining but rarely achieve — or maintain — the shade change that a supervised protocol delivers.
